FAQ for Channel Mixer version 1.1

Q. What is a Channel Mixer effect?

A. This Channel Mixer effect is a versatile tool for mixing the left and right
channels of a stereo track.

Q. What can the Channel Mixer be used for?

A. The Channel Mixer effect is a multi-purpose tool that can perform almost any
type of channel mixing task.

Typical uses include;

* Copying one channel of a stereo track to the other channel.

* Converting a stereo track into 2 channel mono.

* Stereo "widening".

* Swapping left and right channels of a stereo track.

* Vocal Removal.

Q. How do I install the Channel Mixer effect?

A. In the same way as any other Nyquist effect plug-in. Place the .NY file into
the Audacity plug-ins folder and restart Audacity. If you download the plug-in
as a ZIP file it will be necessary to extract the 'channel-mixer.ny' file from
the zip archive before pasting it into the plug-ins folder.

Q. Why don't the sliders do anything?

A. The sliders are only used when "Use Custom" is selected in the Preset
Selector. When any other Preset is selected the sliders are ignored.

Q. What presets are available in the Channel Mixer?

A. Version 1.1 of the Channel Mixer contains 12 presets:

Mono (Average): Creates identical left and right with 50% from the Left channel
and 50% from the Right channel.

Mono (Both Left): Makes both channels the same as the original Left channel.

Mono (Both Right): Makes both channels the same as the original Right channel.

Centre to Left: Moves sounds from the middle of the stereo stage to the Left.

Centre to Right: Moves sounds from the middle of the stereo stage to the Right.

Swap Left/Right: What it says on the tin.

Wide Stereo: Expands the stereo width (requires that the original track is true
stereo).

Extra Wide: Same as 'Wide Stereo' but more extreme.

Vocal Remover (L/R invert): Removes sound from the centre of the stereo mix and
inverts the right channel.

Vocal Remover (mono): Removes sound from the centre of the stereo mix.

Invert Left: Inverts the Left channel

Invert Right: Inverts the Right channel.

Q. Can other presets be added?

A. Any mix of left and right channels can be produced by selecting "Use Custom"
in the Preset selector. The mix is then controlled by the sliders.

If you require additional settings adding to the Preset list you can either
modify the channel-mixer.ny file in a text editor, or contact the author at
http://audionyq.com

Q. What's the difference between "Vocal Remover (mono)" and "Vocal Remover
(invert)"?

A. The "Vocal Remover (mono)" setting "cancels out" sound from the cent re of
the stereo sound stage by mixing the original left channel with the inverted
right channel. The resulting track contains identical audio in both left and
right channels and is therefore "mono".

The "Vocal Remover (invert)" setting does the same except that the right channel
of the output mix is inverted so that it is exactly out of phase with the left
channel. This can sound more "spacious" if played in stereo, though if played on
mono equipment, or later converted to mono, it may produce silence.
